In our last post, Doug and I shared our thoughts on beliefs and how they shape who we are.

It’s important to examine what we think are truths and decide if our beliefs fit in with who we are today.

Many beliefs are installed in us when we’re young and we never question them.

This leads to going through life on autopilot where decisions are made based on ideas that we may not really believe in anymore…

I used to think that money was somehow bad and dirty… Doing something for love and not expecting compensation was somehow better than being paid fairly for your efforts… It’s easy to see how such a belief can lead to frustration.

That Was Then, This Is Now

It’s time to take stock of your core beliefs and decide if you wish to keep them or create new ones to replace them. We all hold sacred “truths” for every situation imaginable, so the exercise below will guide you through getting to know the basic, catch all topics of life.

As you work through these other beliefs will pop into your thoughts. Everyone will go about this differently. Follow your thoughts… As you progress you’ll get in touch with more focused beliefs. The process becomes easier as you do it.

Exercise

Grab a piece of paper and make a list of beliefs that you hold about the following topics:

  • Money
  • Life
  • Work/Career
  • Death
  • Who Am I?
  • Dreams
  • Fun

Write down every belief you hold for these topics, and for any others that are important to you. Maybe you want to add love, or family or volunteering to your list… Go ahead! Get a feel for what’s driving your decisions in life. It may take more than one sitting to get through everything…

Keep going until you don’t have anything else to write. Is money evil? Dirty? Power? Unimportant?  Get it all down on paper…

Now, take each belief you wrote down, read it and write the opposite next to it. For example, “I have to work hard to get ahead” has the opposite of “I get ahead easily”. Even if the opposite makes you uncomfortable, write it down.

Go to the top and read each belief and its opposite. Which one speaks to you? Which one would you rather have? Circle the one that resonates with you.

When you get through your list re-write all of the circled beliefs. This is your new operating system… This is what you REALLY believe. Get rid of the ones that don’t speak to you anymore and replace them with the new list.

Keep your list handy and read through it often. You need to re-program your mind and become the true you. It is that easy…

  1. Great exercise! Will have to do this after work tonight. Thanks 🙂 I’ve often said the adage “Stand for something or you’ll fall for anything” is also a bit self-limiting. Sometimes, you have to move your stand, kind of like deer hunting 😀

  3. I did this exercise with my beliefs about money. I circled every one of the opposites! What does that say?

    You have to save as much as possible. You do not have to save as much as possible.
    It is in short supply. It is in abundance.
    It is very important. It is not very important.
    It is power. It is not power.
    It gives you security. It does not give you security.
    It gives you happiness. It does not give you happiness.
    It gives you freedom. It does not give you freedom.
    It makes the world go round. It does not make the world go round.

    1. It sounds like you realized something important… We’re often told how to think that isn’t in line with our actual feelings.

  6. So, so timely guys. THANK YOU. Money is a tricky one for me and I’m learning to think abundantly about allowing creativity and money go hand in hand. The ‘art for money’ concept gets me tripped up and for the life of me I can’t figure out why!

  7. When I moved from NYC to New Mexico I discovered that I could live without having to pay for the cost of living in the Big City. I also discovered that New York is not the be all and end all. The best things in life are free. People enhance our lives and share our triumphs and tragedies. We learn life lessons daily through our own experiences and those of others. We are who we choose to be. Late in his illustrious life, Winston Chuchill was asked what he regretted most. He answered that he worried about things that might happen that never happened. It is waste of time to try to micro manage the future while wasting our present.

    1. I moved from Poughkeepsie NY to Florida- My quality of life is much higher and the cost is much lower.

      Living in the present is important. I used to worry about “what ifs” but I realized that many of them never materialize. As you stated, it’s a waste of time to try and manage what hasn’t even happened yet.

      1. The person you are today is not the same person you will be tomorrow. We are touched by people and events on a daily basis. If you read a newspaper you quickly realize that today’s crisis will soon be out of sight and out of mind.
        Our minds select what we choose to remember and so we are like snowflakes or grains of sand, alike but individually different. We cannot change our past nor predict our future so we must live as fully as we can each day.
