Accessing The Power Of Animals.

It is just like man’s vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions. Mark Twain

Animals As Spiritual Beings

Lascaux cave painting- 16000 years ago. I think that’s Doug in the very front…

Animals have been honored for their special powers throughout history.

Ancient cultures depicted animals in art and by wearing fetishes in the hope of capturing some of the spiritual essence to use in everyday life.

Even today, in our societies that are far removed from nature, animals are used to convey certain qualities by association.

Sports teams are named after strong and fierce animals such as the Seahawks, Bears and Wildcats.

Jaguar, Impala and Thunderbird are automobile names that use animals to invoke speed, strength and majesty.

Societies as well as individuals have associated themselves with various animals in the past, and continue to do so today. The difference is today many people are unaware of the power that animals hold on the spiritual level.

What’s Your Animal?

Do you have an attraction to a certain animal or even a few of them? Do you collect art or trinkets that depict your favorite animal?

Most of us have pets of some kind. I have two dogs, five cats and six chickens. Our pets are often different than our spirit animal. I write this blog with a stuffed monkey and you’d think this is my spirit animal… Monkey isn’t my spirit animal though…Crow is.

Ever since I was a child I’ve been fascinated with crows. This fascination has followed me in to adulthood and I now have crow art on my walls, crow fetishes and sculptures and even a crow tattoo.

As I’ve grown older I’ve become more crow-like in my ways. No, I don’t fly around cawing… I’ve taken on more of the attributes of Crow the spirit animal.

As shared on this website:

Crow is the left-handed guardian. Crow knows the unknowable mysteries of creation and is the keeper of all sacred law.  Crow guides the magic of healing and the change in consciousness that will bring about a new reality and dispel “dis-ease” or illness. You can rest assured when ever crows are around, magic is near by and you are about to experience a change in consciousness.

Crow can give you the courage to enter the darkness of the void, which is the home of all that is not yet in form.

If you have a crow as a totem, you need to be willing to walk your talk and speak your truth. You must put aside your fear of being a voice in the wilderness and “caw” the shots as you see them. Crow is an omen of change. If he keeps appearing to you he may be telling you that you have a powerful voice when addressing issues that you do not quite understand or feel that they are out of balance.

Crows are the bringer of messages from the spirit world, and is thought to dwell beyond the realm of time and space. When you meet crow, he could be telling you that there will be changes in your life and that possibly you should step by the usual way you view reality and look into the inner realms …walk your talk…be prepared to let go of your old thinking and embrace a new way of viewing yourself and the world.

Think about what animals you’re drawn to, or have been drawn to in the past. I’m sure you have an affinity for a certain animal and you just haven’t thought about it as a spiritual connection.

In our next post, we’ll share an exercise with which you can discover what your spirit animal is, and learn what each animal represents.

As humans, we’re tied to nature on all levels whether we acknowledge it or not. You may be surprised what your animal is, and how much you have in common with its archetype.

  1. So beautiful and unique! Everything has a spirit. Spirits exist to change our thinking. We’ve got to find the reason which spirit will change us – the master. Wonderful is your thought to serve as a pupil to an animal.

    1. Thank you- Animals are great teachers if we listen to them.

      1. Yes, we’ve that ‘third’ ear in the heart. We can learn from anything till we die.

  2. Some of you may dream of certain animals or have them come up in images. These are all important too. Animals all carry a certain energy and symbolism to them. GREAT POST!

    1. Thanks Julie- I plan to expand on the symbolism of animals in future posts.

  3. Excellent post Brother… All has its purpose for its given time… My post on evolution speaks of this as well from a Spiritual Insight I experienced which enabled me to see that in the course of Our Spiritual Evolution We have been everything… EVERYTHING is sacred.

When One realizes this One KNOWS – “I AM Everything” – Oneness

It is The Law of The Universe. If One would be at the top One must begin at the bottom…

To be master, one must be servant to all and lord over none…

Sharing the link to the post with utmost respect –

  4. Of course Doug was there a-way-back, that is why he has so much wisdom today 🙂

    1. He is a wise monkey, but not in a wisdom sort of way…

The animals I have identified with through life have changed. First, the duck billed platypus, all mixed up; then the elephant, moving ponderously with heavy legs; then the giraffe with his head in the sky; now, the eagle and the wolf pack. It is great, appreciating the wisdom of the animal kingdom.

    Fran xxx :-))

    1. Thanks for sharing Fran- I’ve had a few animals who’ve moved through my life as well. Crow has been a constant though.

  7. I believe that everything was made spiritual before we came to this earth. I am not sure what animal I gravitate towards. I grew up with cats and dogs. we have cat now only because hubby doesn’t like dogs. We almost had our home on fire but our cat saved us. I have had a lot of experiences with cats helping me out. Believe it or not. But I have!!!

    1. Cats are very spiritual animals… I have five and the always seem to be trying to teach me something. It’s hard to listen to five demanding fur beasts at once though.

i am a crow too – i was always connected to them somehow – usually when i needed strength and guidance – then when i was at my lowest i met and married one and joined a whole family of them!!!! Now the crow is with me constantly, and a regular motif! Which is probably why i met you through this blog… and enjoy your words so much … keep going, we are listening!

    1. My wife is a crow as well. It’s the first thing we discovered about each other when we met…

      Thanks for following along!

  9. Can you guess my spirit animal? Look at my picture. I relate better to furry creatures than humans, although I have known a few fury humans.

    1. It looks like a blue heron to me… Furry creatures are great, as are feathered ones.
