Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. ~Calvin Coolidge
Knowing who you are and where you want to be in life is only the beginning of the path to contentment. Having a clear picture of your desires is an important first step. A journey can’t begin unless there is a destination firmly established… Otherwise it’s just rambling around.
We’ve established who we are and what we want to be when we grow up. The path is uncovered and we’re ready to go. What more do we need? Persistence, and lots of it…
Persistence is the fuel that powers our mental vehicle. Dreams and vision are made real by persistence. Figuring out who we really are and what we desire seemed a difficult and frustrating task, and it was. But now the real work begins.
Doug and I know where we want to be in life… Now we have to get there. We have a clear map that starts with us now and ends with a big red X and smiley faces. Getting there will not be easy though.
The exciting aspect of our monkey odyssey is at least we know what direction to go in now. Before, we had wistful half dreams and a vague desire to “do something else”. After completing the previous exercises, we now have a framework on which to hang our efforts.
A lot of energy will be expended in reaching our goals. But it will all be directed towards our final destination, and not wasted on scattered half wishes and the dreariness of no direction.
We have a goal, a destination firmly set. Persistence will get us there. Any obstacle that bars our way won’t be an insurmountable wall anymore… we’ll climb it, learn new skills and flick our tails at it as we continue on. Without a goal, setbacks often mean failure. With a goal and persistence, there are no setbacks… Only opportunities to learn, grow and improve ourselves.
Persistence is never giving up, no matter what others tell you. It is slogging on to reach your goal, in spite of the negativity hurled at you. Who knows better than you what you desire? Exactly… no one…
The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows. ~ Milton Glaser
Believe in yourself and your dreams. Work towards making them real. Chip away at it each day… Build upon each tiny success and keep forward momentum. Turn obstacles into springboards and move towards your goal with a new found push… Keep working at that coconut… You’ll get it open if you keep trying.
