What would we be doing in life if reality wasn’t in the way? This is what Doug and I are thinking about. If money wasn’t an issue, and we could just do and be what we wanted, what would that picture look like? Certainly it wouldn’t look like our last “career”, driving around with a badge, doing the evil bidding of a bloated municipal government. No way! That’s what made us go native, and scoot back to the trees.
So, what is it then? We didn’t know. It’s a shock to realize that our dreams weren’t even formed enough to spring forward yelling “me,me!”. No wonder we’ve been stuck in all aspects of existence, letting life happen to us. We didn’t know what life would look like even if we could create it from scratch…
We started another list. On this one, we wrote about our perfect career. What would it look like. How much were we making? What skills were we using? This felt strange and new. We realized we never really gave much thought to this before. We’re surprised that what’s on this list differs somewhat from our mental image of ourselves.
- I feel content.
- I am helping others realize their potential.
- I am teaching others about alternative ways of being.
- I am becoming a better person.
- I make a decent amount of money (as close as we came to how much we’re paid).
- I work for myself.
- I am respected.
Hmm. there’s no mention of art, or creating physical things. Maybe Doug and I have held on to this old model of ourselves because we didn’t know how else to be. Maybe we really aren’t those monkeys anymore, but we don’t know who we are. This is an aha! moment for us… Maybe we’re less than happy because we’re still trying to be bonobos, when we have actually grown into spider monkeys! Breakthrough!
Imagine your perfect career. What would you be doing right now if you didn’t have to worry about money, status, what others thought or how practical the job is? Think about this deeply. Clearly picture this in your mind. Don’t worry if you can’t come up with much yet. Keep thinking about your perfect career, and try to bring it in to focus.
Write about your perfect career. Make a list or just start writing. Don’t be held back by limitations. If you want to write computer code but are a plumber, there really isn’t THAT much of a hill to climb to get from one to the other. You just have to decide what you want, and what it looks like. Skills can be learned. Changes can be made. You must have a clear idea of what you want though.
- Where are you?
- Who do you work with?
- How much do you make?
- What skills are you using (even if you don’t have them yet)?
- What are you providing?
- How do you feel?
Write down anything else you can think of. We’re not trying to pinpoint an exact job match here. We’re just trying to get the brain thinking about who you really are and what you really want… So, who are you?
